IRS Says 1.1 Million Returns Possibly Fraudulent

Senators also request IRS counter scams that defraud individual taxpayers.

The Internal Revenue Service has flagged some 1.1 million 2022 tax returns for potential identity fraud requiring additional review, totaling more than $6 billion in refunds. The agency has already confirmed 12,817 returns to be fraudulent, preventing $105.3 million from being sent out as refunds.

The IRS says they are using 236 identity filters that disclose possible fraud. The filters consider characteristics such as income and withholding amounts, filing requirements and history, and prisoner status.

The IRS has also been asked by legislators to implement measures to counter the scamming of individual taxpayers. Some members of the Senate recently urged IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel to use all the tools at the agency’s disposal to counter artificial intelligence scams that defraud taxpayers.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Commissioner Werfel as he oversees the review of fraudulent returns.
  • For IRS officials as they seek to determine the legitimacy of refund filings.
  • For members of the Senate as they try to protect the American taxpayer from AI fraud.
